So, before I’d travel to visit another country, I tend to search local music/artists. Many moons ago, there was this ginormous music store named Virgin Records Music Store, which was strategically located on Broadway and 46th Street, the heart of NYC. It was where me and a few of my friends would go after school and listen to new albums or the top 20 albums for free! We were high school kids and this was the ideal thing to do after school. That’s when my curiosity sparked and my desire to listen to music from different parts of the world began. That simple, yet profound experience changed my life forever. I set out a goal to travel and see other parts of the world. I didn’t initially know when and how it was going to happen, I just knew it was something I was going to do. Simply because of music.
My first “big trip” was studying aboard in Senegal (West Africa), I listened to several artist but the one that stood out was Youssau N’Dour – the song in particular, Thiapathioly. As a matter of fact, there was this one time, where he performed live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, it was an amazing performance.
Then, there was this one occasion when I worked aboard and went on an impromptu weekend trip to Cairo Egypt; I explored music in Arabic. There was one musician that stood out Rachid Taha a music artist from Algeria, the tune in particular, Rachid Taha and Khaled – Ya Rayah, it was a live concert I heard browsing through music at the Virgin Mega store, back then, there were CD players and that particular concert I heard over headphones… was amazing!
Music is an art form that connects us, so when I recently heard a song on TickTok, “Basbousa”-I needed more info, it felt like the song transported me somewhere in the Middle East. I did some research, turns out the song is apparently about two cats who fall in love, while the male cat endearingly calls her basbousa and follows her around, from house to house, for a kiss. Anyhow, if you’ve ever wanted to know what its like to walk through the catacombs and around the Great Pyramids of Giza- Egypt or one of Egypt’s bazaar vibrant markets, this is what this candle smells like, Giza.
